First and foremost, wherever you are in the world, I hope this finds you and yours healthy, and helping others to stay well.
These are some challenging and uniquely disruptive times. I've been working with leaders and teams for 30 years to help them expand their capacity, and while we're facing turmoil we've never faced before, the need for effective leadership and teamwork is more important than ever.
More and more teams are learning to work together remotely. There are good resources out there on leading distributed teams and working effectively in a virtual environment.
I’d like to summarize 5 basic tips that are the most essential:
1. Lead! Don’t just Manage. From wherever you are in the organization.
-Yes it’s important to coordinate the people and the effort, but it’s critical that you lead by example -Whatever your role is.
-Show your colleagues that you care about them, keep up the morale, and inspire your team.
-This is more important now than ever.
-You may need to get creative and get out of your own comfort zone.
Welcome to leadership!
2. Communicate!
-What channels are you going to use, for what purposes? Is everyone included? Is everyone getting the same information?
-Remember to encourage both formal and informal communications channels, encourage 1-to-1 connections, teams and All Hands interactions.
-Have a regular cadence (rhythm) for communication - e.g., a Daily Update by email first thing in the morning, an All Hands Tag Up once per week on the same day at the same time, a Virtual Happy Hour every Friday at 5pm, etc.
3. Use the Tools
-There are a lot of great tools out there now for virtual teamwork and collaboration - Zoom, WebEx, Slack,
MSTeams, etc.
-Find out what tools you have access to and make sure you know how to use them fully!
-Ensure that Everyone has access and learns how to use them - rapidly.
-Learn together - have the ‘expert’ on the team share their insights with others on a Videoconference. Make it a Brown Bag event!
-Here’s the good news - this is where the world is going anyway, so all of this learning is taking you in the right direction!
4. Continue to Learn & Strengthen Your Skills
-Just because you’re working virtually, doesn’t mean you should stop learning and growing stronger, individually and collectively.
-There are a lot of great on-line resources out there for you to take advantage of: TEDTalks, LinkedIn learning, endless YouTube videos, courses, etc.
5. Maximize the Up Side
-There are tons of things you can do virtually to support each other and stay engaged that would be impossible otherwise - take advantage of these! E.g.,
-Connect with colleagues from across the organization
-Have a Guest Speaker from anywhere in the world!
-Have some FUN - have a “Team Jersey” day! Meet each others’ families & pets! Share your hobbies!
-Hold Virtual Team Events - games, contests, Breakfast, Lunch, Happy Hour - the possibilities are endless!
I’d be pleased to help your team get established in the Virtual World.
Whether you need to get up to speed quickly to get your work going, or to invest in:
-Training - on a wide variety of topics
-Teambuilding - strengthening collaboration, valuing strengths, etc.
-Planning - near-term (Business) or long-term (Strategic)
-Coaching - One-on-One or in groups
All of these can be done virtually in a very engaging, interactive, effective manner.
Some topics that might be timely for you could be:
-Implementing Best Practices for Virtual Teams
-Leading through times of chaos
-Defining an effective communication plan
-Sustaining engagement & morale
And of course nearly any other topic that would be of most valuable to you and your team.
If my support would be of value, please let me know. It would be a privilege to work with you and your team.
Take care of yourself - and take care of your neighbors, your colleagues, friends and family.
This situation is impacting a lot of people in a lot of ways. Let’s step up to this challenge and LEAD , from wherever we are, to make our communities stronger.
